Area of Triangle, Circumradius and Inradius | NIMCET
Learn the half-angle formulas in a triangle, Heron's formula and other area formulas, and the formulas for the circumradius R, inradius r and exradii, with NIMCET examples.
Quick answer: For a triangle with sides a,b,c, semi-perimeter s and area Δ: Δ=21bcsinA=s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c), the circumradius is R=4Δabc, the inradius is r=sΔ, and the exradius opposite A is r1=s−aΔ. The half-angle formulas, such as tan2A=s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c), connect these quantities to the angles.
All roots are positive because each half-angle is acute. These come from the cosine rule together with cosA=1−2sin22A (see the sub-multiple angle formulas).

Key results
Equilateral, side a
Δ=43a2, R=3a, r=23a, so R=2r
Right-angled at C
R=2c (half the hypotenuse), r=s−c=2a+b−c
Worked examples
Example 1: the 3-4-5 triangle
Find Δ, R and r for sides 3, 4, 5.
Step 1: It is right-angled, so Δ=21⋅3⋅4=6 and s=6.
Step 2:R=25=2.5 and r=sΔ=1.
Check:R=4Δabc=2460=2.5 ✓.
Example 2: Heron's formula
Find the area of the triangle with sides 13, 14, 15.
Step 1:s=21.
Step 2:
Δ=21⋅8⋅7⋅6=7056=84
Step 3: Then r=2184=4 and R=4⋅8413⋅14⋅15=3362730=865.
Example 3: exradius
For the 13, 14, 15 triangle, find r1 (opposite the side 13).
r1=s−aΔ=21−1384=884=10.5
Example 4: area from two sides and an angle
Two sides are 6 and 8 with included angle 30°. Then Δ=21⋅6⋅8⋅sin30∘=12.

Exam tips
Compute s, s−a, s−b and s−c first; almost every formula here uses them.
Remember 13, 14, 15 gives area 84 and 3, 4, 5 gives area 6; both appear often.
For a right triangle, R is half the hypotenuse, which saves time.
In an equilateral triangle, R=2r; the incentre and circumcentre coincide.
