General English is the smallest section in NIMCET: 10 questions, 4 marks each, 40 marks in total, with a 1-mark penalty for a wrong answer. It shares a 20-minute slot with Computer Awareness at the end of the paper.
That size suggests two things. You should not spend weeks on it, and you should not ignore it either. Forty marks is the difference between dozens of ranks.
What the syllabus covers
From the revised syllabus (2026 onwards):
| Area | What it usually looks like |
|---|---|
| Comprehension | A short passage with questions on meaning and inference |
| Vocabulary | Synonyms, antonyms, word meanings, phrases and idioms |
| Grammar | Error spotting, sentence correction, fill in the blanks |
| Word formation | Using the right form of a word in context |
| Technical writing | Clear, correct sentences in a technical context |
A 20-minute daily routine
You do not need long sessions. You need regular ones.
| Minutes | Activity |
|---|---|
| 0–7 | Vocabulary: learn 8–10 new words with one example sentence each; revise yesterday's |
| 7–14 | Grammar: 10 error-spotting or sentence-correction questions on one rule |
| 14–20 | Reading: one short passage, then summarise it in two lines |
Do this five days a week. On the sixth day, revise the week's words and the grammar rules you got wrong.
Grammar rules worth knowing well
Most grammar questions test a small set of rules:
- Subject-verb agreement
- Tenses and their consistency
- Articles (a, an, the)
- Prepositions
- Pronoun reference
- Parallel structure
- Modifiers placed next to what they describe
Our guides to core grammar rules for error spotting and top grammar rules for NIMCET English go through these with examples.
Building vocabulary that sticks
- Learn words in groups that share a root (for example, bene- in benefit, benevolent, benefactor).
- Use each word in a sentence you write yourself.
- Revise on a schedule: the next day, after a week, after a month.
There is a list of common words and idioms in high-frequency idioms and vocabulary for NIMCET.
In the exam: timing
English and Computer Awareness share the last 20 minutes. Many candidates do English first because it is quick: aim for 6–8 minutes for the 10 English questions, leaving the rest for Computer Awareness. Practise this split in your mocks.
Guess only if you can eliminate options; a wrong answer costs 1 mark.
Useful books
Two books commonly used for this level:
- High School English Grammar and Composition by Wren and Martin, for grammar rules.
- Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis, for root-based vocabulary.
An objective practice book for competitive exams helps for question practice, but one good book per need is enough.
