NIMCET is the entrance test for the MCA programmes at the participating National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and two IIITs. If you are aiming for NIMCET 2027, here is where things stand: as of October 2026, the 2027 information brochure has not been released. Everything below is based on the official NIMCET 2026 brochure, which is the best guide to what 2027 is likely to look like. Treat dates as expected, not confirmed, until the new brochure appears on the official NIMCET website.

Expected timeline for NIMCET 2027

The NIMCET calendar has been very consistent. Here is what happened in 2026, which is the best indicator for 2027.

Event2026 date
Registration opened3 March 2026
Last date to apply1 May 2026
Edit window5–7 May 2026
Admit cardFrom 27 May 2026
Exam6 June 2026
Answer key challenge10–11 June 2026
Result (tentative)29 June 2026
Counselling30 June to late July 2026

The exam was also held in early June in 2024 (8 June) and 2025 (8 June). So for 2027, a reasonable expectation is registration from early March and the exam in the first half of June. Do not book anything around those dates until the official schedule is out.

Who can apply

You must be an Indian national with a UG degree of at least three years that had Mathematics or Statistics as one of the subjects, or a B.E./B.Tech. degree. You also need at least 60% aggregate or 6.5 CGPA (55% or 6.0 CGPA for SC, ST and PwD candidates).

Two points are often misunderstood:

  • There is no upper age limit. Age is used only to break ties between candidates with equal marks.
  • Final-year students can apply, but they must prove eligibility at counselling or admission.

The information brochure guide covers the finer rules, such as why you cannot convert CGPA into a percentage.

Exam pattern

SectionQuestionsMarks per correctPenalty per wrongTotalTime
Mathematics5012−360070 min
Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning406−1.524030 min
Computer Awareness206−1.512020 min (with English)
General English104−140(shared slot)
Total1201,0002 hours

The sections are timed separately, and you cannot go back to an earlier section once its time is over. Mathematics alone carries 60% of the marks, which is why it decides most ranks. If you want to see why, read the breakdown of how the NIMCET marking scheme rewards Mathematics.

Syllabus: what changed

NIMCET published a revised syllabus with effect from 2026. The headline changes:

  • Mathematics covers set theory and logic, probability and statistics, algebra, coordinate geometry (2D), calculus and trigonometry. Vectors do not appear in the revised list, and there is no 3D geometry.
  • Reasoning now explicitly includes problem solving, critical thinking, data interpretation, numerical reasoning, data sufficiency and data visualisation, alongside classic topics such as blood relations and syllogisms.
  • Computer Awareness covers computer basics, data representation (binary, hexadecimal, two's complement, floating point, Boolean algebra), hardware, software, and internet and email safety.
  • General English covers comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, word formation and technical writing.

If you want to learn the maths topics one at a time, start with the chapter pages for Calculus and Algebra.

Participating institutes and seats (2026)

The 2026 MCA programmes were offered at NIT Agartala, MNNIT Allahabad, MANIT Bhopal, NIT Delhi, NIT Jamshedpur, NIT Kurukshetra, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Patna, NIT Raipur, NIT Tiruchirappalli and NIT Warangal, along with IIIT Bhopal and IIIT Vadodara. The seat matrix totalled 1,300 seats, including some self-financing seats. The list has changed between years (NITK Surathkal took part in 2024, for example), so check the 2027 list when it is published.

How admission works after the result

  1. You get a rank based on total marks out of 1,000.
  2. You register for counselling (₹1,000 in 2026) and fill your choices of institutes.
  3. Seats are allotted round by round, in order of rank and choice.
  4. After an allotment you can freeze the seat, float to see if you get a better one, or withdraw.
  5. You report physically at the allotted institute with your documents.

Sample papers and past papers

Real past papers are the best practice. In 2025, the question paper was released along with the provisional answer key in candidates' logins on the official portal, so check that window carefully next year. Beyond that, any "sample paper" is someone's reconstruction; use it for practice, but do not assume its difficulty matches the real exam.

What to do now

If the exam is about seven to eight months away, the most useful things you can do are:

  • Confirm your eligibility, especially the Mathematics/Statistics requirement and your aggregate.
  • Start Mathematics early; it is 600 of the 1,000 marks.
  • Set up a weekly timed practice routine, even if it is only one section at a time.
  • Bookmark the official portal and wait for the 2027 brochure before planning your exam-city choices.
