A long book list is easy to write and hard to use. A more practical way to think about NIMCET books is in pairs: one book that explains the ideas and one that gives you plenty of exam-level questions. Learn from the first, train with the second.

The pairs

SectionTheory book (learn)Practice book (train)
MathematicsNCERT Class 11 and 12R.D. Sharma, Class 11 and 12
Mathematics (extra depth)—Amit M. Agarwal's Arihant volumes, selected chapters
ReasoningR.S. Aggarwal, A Modern Approach to Verbal and Non-Verbal ReasoningM.K. Pandey, Analytical Reasoning, or B.S. Sijwali, A New Approach to Reasoning
Computer AwarenessPradeep K. Sinha, Computer FundamentalsAn objective computer-awareness MCQ book
EnglishWren and Martin, High School English Grammar and CompositionS.P. Bakshi, Objective General English

These are commonly used choices, not official recommendations. If you already own an equivalent book, use it.

How to use a pair

Step 1: Read the topic in the theory book and work its solved examples yourself before looking at the solutions.

Step 2: Do the theory book's exercises until you can solve most without help.

Step 3: Move to the practice book for the same topic, and time yourself.

Step 4: Note every question you get wrong in your error log, and revisit the theory book only for those ideas.

How to split time between the two

StageTheory bookPractice book
First pass through the syllabusAbout 60%About 40%
Second passAbout 20%About 80%
Final two monthsOnly for revisionMostly past papers and mocks instead

When to move on

  • From theory to practice: when you can explain the method aloud without notes.
  • From practice book to papers: when your accuracy on the practice book's harder questions is steady.

What to skip

  • Vectors and 3D geometry chapters, which are not in the revised NIMCET syllabus from 2026.
  • Very long JEE-Advanced-style problems that take 10 minutes. NIMCET gives about 84 seconds per maths question on average.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many books do I need for NIMCET?

Usually two per section: one to learn from and one to practise with.

Is R.D. Sharma good for NIMCET?

It is widely used for practice because of its large number of graded questions.

Which reasoning books are good for NIMCET?

R.S. Aggarwal for coverage, with M.K. Pandey or B.S. Sijwali for practice, are common choices.

Should I use JEE Advanced books for NIMCET?

Selectively. Many problems are longer than NIMCET's time allows, and some topics are not in the NIMCET syllabus.
