Every syllabus list makes all topics look equal. They are not. A NIMCET Mathematics question is worth 12 marks; an English question is worth 4. And within Mathematics, some chapters feed into many others while some stand alone.
This page is a priority map. It is built from two things we know for certain, the official marks per section and the revised syllabus, plus a judgement about how much each topic connects to the rest. It is not based on question counts from past papers, which are not officially published.
Step one: priority by section
| Section | Marks | Marks per question | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 600 | 12 | Highest |
| Reasoning | 240 | 6 | High |
| Computer Awareness | 120 | 6 | Medium |
| English | 40 | 4 | Light but steady |
Mathematics is 60% of the paper, and you are disqualified with zero or negative marks in it. That makes it the first priority for almost everyone.
Step two: priority within Mathematics
Tier 1: foundations that other chapters depend on
Study these first, because weak foundations slow you down everywhere else.
- Algebra basics: indices, logarithms, quadratic equations
- Trigonometric identities: ratios and identities
- Functions: domain and range
- Straight lines: slope and forms of a line
Tier 2: large chapters with many sub-topics
These carry a lot of the syllabus, so they deserve the most practice time.
- Calculus: limits, continuity, derivatives and their applications, definite integrals and area. See the Calculus chapter.
- Coordinate geometry: circles and the three conics. See the Coordinate Geometry chapter.
- Algebra: matrices and determinants, sequences, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem. See the Algebra chapter.
Tier 3: self-contained, quick to learn
These are smaller and more formula-driven. Learn them well, but they do not need weeks.
- Set theory and logic: truth tables, Venn diagrams
- Probability and statistics: Bayes' theorem, variance and standard deviation
- Inverse trigonometry and heights and distances
Lower priority now
- Vectors and 3D geometry are not listed in the revised syllabus from 2026. Keep them aside unless a future syllabus brings them back.
Step three: priority within Reasoning
| Priority | Topics | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First | Coding-decoding, series, blood relations, directions | Quick, rule-based, easy marks with practice |
| Second | Seating arrangements and puzzles | Common and time-consuming; practise for speed |
| Third | Data interpretation, data sufficiency, data visualisation | Newly emphasised in the revised syllabus |
| Ongoing | Syllogisms, statements and conclusions, critical thinking | Need careful reading more than formulas |
Step four: Computer Awareness and English
- Computer Awareness: number systems and two's complement first (calculation-based and predictable), then Boolean algebra, then the factual hardware, software and internet topics.
- English: a little every day. Ten questions do not justify a big block of time, but vocabulary and grammar cannot be crammed.
Turning the map into a plan
A simple rule many students find workable is to give time roughly in proportion to marks, with extra for weak areas. If you study 20 hours a week, that might look like:
| Section | Hours per week |
|---|---|
| Mathematics | 11–12 |
| Reasoning | 4–5 |
| Computer Awareness | 2–3 |
| English | 1–2 |
Adjust it to your strengths. A B.Tech. graduate with strong maths might shift time to Reasoning; a B.Com graduate might need more maths at first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the most important section in NIMCET?
Mathematics. It carries 600 of the 1,000 marks, and zero or negative marks in it lead to disqualification.
Which maths chapters should I start with for NIMCET?
Foundations such as algebra basics, trigonometric identities, functions and straight lines, because later chapters depend on them.
Are vectors important for NIMCET?
Vectors are not in the revised syllabus that applies from 2026.
Is it based on past paper question counts?
No. This map uses the official marks and syllabus. Past-paper counts are not officially published.
