How the list has changed
The list is not fixed. The 2024 brochure included NITK Surathkal and did not include NIT Delhi, NIT Meghalaya or IIIT Vadodara. Check the 2027 list when it is released before you research colleges in depth.
What to weigh before ranking institutes
1. Your realistic rank range
Previous closing ranks tell you which institutes are within reach. Fill choices with that range in mind; the counselling software will not allot a seat above your rank anyway.
2. Cost
Regular NIT seats were far cheaper than self-financing seats and the IIITs in 2026. Add hostel and mess fees to compare the real cost.
3. Placements
Look at MCA-specific placement data, preferably the median package and the percentage placed, from the institute's own placement reports. Institute-wide figures often mix B.Tech. data with MCA.
4. Programme
NIT Patna offered two specialised MCA programmes (Data Sciences and Informatics; AI and IoT). If you have a preference, it matters.
5. Location and campus
Distance from home, climate and the city matter for three years. IIIT Vadodara's Diu campus is a separate choice from Gandhinagar.
A simple way to order choices
- Make a list of every institute you would genuinely join.
- Put them in your real order of preference, not in order of what you think you can get.
- Check that the list includes a few institutes where your rank is comfortably inside last year's closing rank.
The counselling system allots the best choice you qualify for, so honest preferences work in your favour.
