In an exam taken by thousands with only 1,300 seats in 2026, many candidates end up on the same total. When that happens, NIMCET does not give them the same rank. It uses a fixed order of tie-breakers set out in the brochure.
The tie-breaking order
| Step | If totals are equal, the higher rank goes to |
|---|---|
| 1 | The candidate with more marks in Mathematics |
| 2 | Then more marks in Analytical Ability and Logical Reasoning |
| 3 | Then more marks in Computer Awareness |
| 4 | Then the older candidate |
| 5 | Finally, a random selection by computer |
English is not a tie-breaker.
Let's look at an example
Three candidates score 506 in total:
| Total | Maths | Reasoning | Computer | English | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asha | 506 | 312 | 144 | 30 | 20 |
| Ravi | 506 | 300 | 156 | 30 | 20 |
| Meera | 506 | 300 | 144 | 42 | 20 |
Step 1: Asha has the most Mathematics marks (312), so she ranks first among the three.
Step 2: Ravi and Meera are level on Mathematics (300). Ravi has more Reasoning marks (156 vs 144), so Ravi ranks second.
Result: Asha, then Ravi, then Meera.
Why this matters more than it seems
Mathematics questions are worth 12 marks each, so maths scores move in big steps. That makes the first tie-breaker decisive in most ties: two candidates with equal totals are unlikely to also have equal maths marks.
The practical message is the same one the marking scheme gives: Mathematics carries your rank, both in the total and in a tie.
What the rule means for preparation
- Do not trade maths for easier marks. If you can gain 12 marks in Mathematics or 12 marks across two Reasoning questions, the totals are equal, but the Mathematics marks also win ties.
- Reasoning is the second line. It breaks ties among candidates level in Mathematics, so solid Reasoning is not wasted effort.
- English matters for the total only. It is worth 40 marks and never breaks a tie, so keep it efficient.
What it means in the exam hall
- Accuracy in Mathematics is doubly valuable. A wrong answer costs 3 marks from your total and from your first tie-breaker.
- Never let Mathematics fall to zero or below. That is disqualification, not just a lower rank.
- Use the full 70 minutes. Each extra correct maths answer counts twice: in the total and in any tie.
Things the rule does not do
- It does not give extra marks; it only orders candidates with equal totals.
- It does not depend on category; category affects which seats you can be allotted, not the tie order.
- Age matters only after three section comparisons, so it rarely decides anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first tie-breaker in NIMCET?
Higher marks in Mathematics.
Is English used to break ties in NIMCET?
No. The tie-breakers are Mathematics, Reasoning, Computer Awareness, age and then a random draw.
Does age matter in NIMCET?
Only as the fourth tie-breaker, where the older candidate is ranked higher.
Can two candidates get the same NIMCET rank?
No. If all tie-breakers are equal, the final step is a random selection by computer.
