If you have just heard of NIMCET from a senior or a coaching ad, here is the short version.

NIMCET stands for NIT MCA Common Entrance Test. It is a national entrance exam for the Master of Computer Applications (MCA) programmes at participating National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and, in recent years, two IIITs. One score, one counselling process, and around 1,300 seats in 2026.

Who takes it

Mostly final-year and graduated students from:

  • BCA
  • B.Sc. (Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics and similar)
  • B.Tech./B.E.
  • Other degrees that had Mathematics or Statistics as a subject

The common thread is a degree with some Mathematics or Statistics, and at least 60% or 6.5 CGPA (55% or 6.0 for SC, ST and PwD). There is no age limit.

What it tests

NIMCET is one two-hour computer-based paper with four parts.

PartWhat it coversShare of marks
MathematicsAlgebra, calculus, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, probability, sets60%
Analytical Ability and Logical ReasoningPuzzles, coding-decoding, data interpretation, critical thinking24%
Computer AwarenessComputer basics, data representation, hardware, software, internet12%
General EnglishComprehension, vocabulary, grammar, technical writing4%

The first thing most beginners notice is the weight of Mathematics. It is 600 of the 1,000 marks, at roughly Class 11–12 level with some college topics. That is why the most common advice you will hear is "start with maths".

How it becomes a seat

Step 1: You register in March and write the exam in June.

Step 2: You get an All India rank based on your total marks.

Step 3: You register for counselling and list the institutes you want, in order.

Step 4: Seats are allotted by rank and choice over several rounds.

Step 5: You report at the allotted NIT or IIIT with your documents.

Why people choose NIMCET

  • Institutes: MCA programmes at well-known NITs such as Tiruchirappalli, Warangal and Allahabad.
  • Cost: tuition at most NITs was ₹35,000 per semester in 2026, lower than many private colleges.
  • One exam, many options: one test covers all the participating institutes.
